Heat and groups still matter. The first house decides the day before the first case.
On a loom the first hour is unpaid: you count ends, you even the tension, you do not throw. Museum paper here copies that unpaid hour. Name the house. Name the snag. Name the pick after which the cloth is cut. Three names. Fewer than three and you are still fingering skeins in a stall.
Amr walks a posted hour when the glass has changed. Laila puts a month on the file after tea, not during it. Celebrity labels travel. Sett does not: packed surplus, campus walking, a precinct that still prays. We write those shapes.
A screenshot that still opens underground
Photograph the house’s own board and keep the file on the phone. A live tab dies in the metro. We will not invent a quiet Friday from 2019, a kerb shortcut, or a second house after a campus that has already taken the eye.
Carved limestone from the lane. The plate is not a walking tour of al-Muizz.
Yarn we will not dress
Prices for a morning that has not happened yet.
A skip sold from a coach step.
Giza walking plus geology plus Tahrir as the August default.
A hotel that talks as if it cut tickets.
No name on the warp? The shuttle stays in the basket.
5 Champollion Street · 28 August 2026 · Amr Selim · dress the warp first
Notebook: the scarf that ran, 11 August 2026
09:00 — cheap cotton scarf from Khan el-Khalili, meant for a cousin in Mansoura. Edge looked finished because a machine had zigzagged it. 11 August — scarf comes back in a parcel. Weft run, hole the size of a thumb, threads in the lining. 09:25 the same week — tentmaker on Khayamiya binds a sample edge by hand and will not sell a piece whose warp is still slack. The ruined scarf hangs from a nail above the tea. No museum that day. The method is that object: a surface can look ready and still unravel.
Limestone from the lane. Historic Cairo keeps its own morning. Downtown does not inherit it.
Three names before anyone walks
Before shoes leave Champollion Street the card already has a house, a snag, and a pick after which the cloth is cut. Amr writes those three. Laila adds weather she expects: cooked masonry, a class on the only readable case, water the magnet will refuse. A nameless card is a string of doors. Carry ink; a dark metro will not eat it. Keep a photograph of the house’s own posted hour on the device, not in a live tab.
We do not keep a freeze-frame of famous labels. Labels walk. What we keep is sett: packed surplus in an old hall, walking sold as metres, naves in a neighbourhood that still prays. Will glare eat the first hour. After the kilometres you will actually walk, would another pick still hold. At noon, does colour remain, or only a skyline a phone already sold you.
Refusals on the nail: Giza plus Dahshur plus Tahrir under one August sun — the weft ran by midday; tea after one house. A long hall of celebrity captions — slack looking; one material, then bind the edge. A stranger at the kerb with a faster layout is another stall. Use the door the house printed.
What the card refuses to invent
You will meet this week’s Friday, not last year’s empty lane. We will not draw a door the museum never posted. Attention left after a long campus walk is not another looking. When glass wording moves, Amr checks the last metres and Laila dates the HTML that night. Short and true beats long and stale. The margin is Updates.
A hired voice is company. Looking still has to hold without it. If someone cannot cover a long campus, telephone that museum; do not invent toughness. These notes assume feet unless a page says otherwise. Champollion Street does not sell admission codes and does not sit in a palace ticket window. Send dates if you want the pages read back. Do not ask this desk to timetable your hours as if it were a till. Visitors pick up the ruined scarf and explain why it ought to have travelled. Captions do not run. Cheap edges do. Keep the specimen in sight on the night you dress the next warp.
Dress the warp. Throw one pick. Bind the selvedge. Staff glass still outranks Champollion Street. We will not throw a second shuttle through cloth already cut from the beam.
From the beam
Do you take a loom into galleries?
No. The frame is a habit: dress, throw once, bind. The timber stays on Champollion Street. The habit travels.
Does a hired speaker finish the looking?
Company, yes. Substitute for stone you can still describe that evening, no.
Will this street timetable my Tuesday?
Send dates. We do not sell admission codes and we do not sit in a palace ticket window.
I already know Cairo. Why paper?
Knowing a city is how people throw two shuttles before the first cloth is off the beam.
Why keep a ruined scarf?
A zigzag is not a selvedge. The scarf is the warning you can hold.
